Trish has written a very moving and informative piece about the way people talk about a person’s death as though trying to avoid actually talking about that person’s death. Trigger warning: references to death/bereavement
In this poem Tony Bennett powerfully conveys the way in which mental distress permeates life and awareness so completely; but it also looks to adjustment and adaptation to the external realities of life as the way to survive and recover.
Here the poet describes how difficult it is when the person you know best stops you from doing what you enjoy and makes you doubt yourself. She conquers this former friend and shows us it’s possible to overcome the greatest of challenges.
This poem and illustration give a glimpse into the angst of the mind tormented in the throes of an episode. Hopefully this will resonate for those who experience mental ill health and give insight to those who don't.
